“Como La Flor” stars Andréa Gomez a 23-year-old student at Old Dominion University, majoring in music education. The production is one-woman musical tribute to the singer, her life and music. The mix of music such as No Me Queda Mas, Amor Prohibido, I Could Fall in Love, monologues and material spoken by Selena herself taken from interviews are sure to keep the fans engaged.

Birthday celebration, July 11, 2009, for Guatemalan Sandra Mueller will brighten the future for many at St. Patrick Catholic School and Physicians for Peace. In hard economic times, Mrs. Mueller has turned her birthday party into a fundraiser. The event will raise funds for tuition scholarships at St. Patrick and free dental help for the needy through Physicians for Peace. $12,460 was the finally count of the twelve-hour Mambo Room dance-a-thon  March 7, 2009. At 11am the music started and hundreds of feet strutted to the warm-up beat for the studio’s first dance for a cause. 13-year-old Emily Walters was a major part of the cause.
The teen and mom thanked the energetic crowd of dancers for caring about them as many shared words of hope and good health.

For Teresa M. Vazquez-Salvadores, Hispanic outreach coordinator for the Response Sexual Assault Support Services of the YWCA, the need for a specific effort to reach the Hampton Roads Hispanic population is evident by the area’s changing demographics. “It is obvious how much the Hispanic population has increased here,” she said. Norfolk-based Response has served sexual assault victims in the area since 1975, but started Hispanic Outreach a year ago.

Nothing keeps Caribbean-Americans away from their Carnivals, not even high gas prices. “In the Caribbean, when people hear about a Carnival -- they come out, even when the economy is bad,” said Abby Mills, Treasurer of the Virginia Caribbean-American Cultural Association Inc.  VCACA, a Norfolk-based 501c3 nonprofit organization, expects a record turnout for its signature annual event, Virginia CaribFest, July 18 – 19 in Harbor Park.

Norfolk Festevents Ltd. expects a crowd of 5,000 in Town Point Park for the July 12 event. Performances begin at 5 p.m. and festivities close at 10 p.m. Admission to the family friendly event is free and open to the public.

Assistant Chief of Police Dawn Barber hopes to see an improvement in community relations as a result of the Saturday soccer tournament. "We are seeking to forge positive relationships between the Newport News Police Department and the Hispanic community," she said.

Agustin Rolando Rojas glanced anxiously at the rain pounding down on Ghent Saturday afternoon. The artist and former art professor whose work is currently displayed at Lorrie Saunder's gallery in Norfolk frequently worries about the weather. On rainy weekdays, he cannot work. He therefore does not collect pay from his construction job. Rojas does not mind the masonry work, he also worked construction in Canada, but he does worry about the low salary paid to him and his co-workers, many of whom are from Mexico and Central America. Rojas also wonders how he will eventually achieve his dream of teaching art in Hampton Roads...

Qian Cai, director of the Demographics and Workforce section at the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center, recently published a paper analyzing the U.S. Census Bureau's data on Virginia's Hispanic population.
