Would you like to improve your English skills? How would greater proficiency raise your quality of life? There are several locations where local volunteers offer English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for free. People like Idalia Rosa-Martinez of Greenbrier Library in Chesapeake and Victor Celania at Ingleside Baptist Church in Norfolk extend their time to those who are interested in strengthening their connections with the English speaking community.

Forty students from Virginia Beach high schools have been selected to learn the valuable lessons of motivation, hard work and the essentials of college life as they partake in Richmond’s first Hispanic Youth Symposium. The event is sponsored by the Hispanic College Fund and received funding from the Virginia General Assembly in 2007. It will be held at the University of Richmond from July 16 through 19.

Summer has officially arrived, and it’s time to start those summer reading lists. Though it’s not always easy to get kids back into books once school’s out, the Norfolk library system may be able to help. Both the Kirn Memorial Library in downtown Norfolk and the Mary B. Pretlow Anchor Branch in Oceanview offer a bilingual story time in English and Spanish.

TCC kicked off 2007 Hispanic Heritage Month with a poetry reading and speech by the internationally recognized poet Martin Espada. Dr. Gabriela Toletti, TCC Spanish professor, opened the Sept. 18 event talking about the history of Hispanic Heritage Month. Dr. Quintin Bullock, TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus provost, had the honor to introduce Espada.
