Los Heavy Duty de Hampton Roads" braved the heat and played a spirited soccer game against "Los Pistoleros" of the Norfolk Police Department Saturday afternoon. They later took on the Newport News Police Department during the June 27 event at Norfolk's Lake Taylor High School. The soccer tournament, the second such event sponsored by the police departments this summer, also featured live music and Latin food. The police departments strive to build positive relationships with the Hispanic communities of Hampton Roads by holding community outreach events.

Nine-time Grammy Winner Eddie Palmieri and La Perfecta II headline the eighth annual AT&T Norfolk Latino Music Festival. Norfolk Festevents Ltd. expects a crowd of 5,000 in Town Point Park for the July 12 event. Performances begin at 5 p.m. and festivities close at 10 p.m. Admission to the family friendly event is free and open to the public.
Jun-29-2008 Forty students from Virginia Beach high schools have been selected to learn the valuable lessons of motivation, hard work and the essentials of college life as they partake in Richmond’s first Hispanic Youth Symposium. The event is sponsored by the Hispanic College Fund and received funding from the Virginia General Assembly in 2007. It will be held at the University of Richmond from July 16 through 19.
Jun-27-2008 Summer has officially arrived, and it’s time to start those summer reading lists. Though it’s not always easy to get kids back into books once school’s out, the Norfolk library system may be able to help. Both the Kirn Memorial Library in downtown Norfolk and the Mary B. Pretlow Anchor Branch in Oceanview offer a bilingual story time in English and Spanish.

The Yantalo Peru Foundation held a dinner at Imperio Inca restaurant in Ghent as its first fundraiser to benefit the Peruvian village of Yantalo. Approximately 20 people attended the June 8 event, said Sarina Hrubesch, the Foundation's director of development.
